Within the last couple of years, South Africa has had an increased rate of crime. Murder, rape and carjacking have become the norm. To be exact, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has pegged South Africa as being the 2nd highest country in murder and assault per capita. It also says that South Africa has the most rapes per capita. Stolen cars or cash in route crime is also very high.
As a result of the high rate of insecurity, the general population has become afraid. A few investors have diverted their businesses to other areas. Additional investors have uprooted to other closeby countries. Even more have gone to Europe and Australia due to the security problems. The South African Police Service is not able to deal with the problem. They state that they don't possess enough equipment to handle the problem and that their morale is very low. As a result, security service companies have entered the country in order to take up the slack of the police.
Carjacking has turned into a regular occurrence in South Africa. The problem has become so bad that a few insurance companies will not insure certain cars because of the risk that they have for being carjacked.
There have been more rapes recently. In a survey of 4000 women, at least 30 percent say that they have been raped within the last twelve months. Amazingly, a minimum of twenty five percent of the men that were interviewed in a different poll said that they had raped at least one person within the last twelve months. Child and baby rapes also occur in South Africa. Recently, people who go to restaurants have been robbed during their meals.
The South African Police looks like they are not able to handle the situation. Because they don't have enough tools and their morale is low, these are some of the main reasons why it is hard to fight crime in South Africa. Police officers have also been killed as a result of this problem.
The worsening security problem has made some members of communities to do something about what is going on. A few have started to do something about the security problems by using private companies to offer security services.
More gated communities have been seen in South Africa due to the current insecurity situations in the city areas. Making a gated neighborhood consists of sealing up certain exits in a suburban location and only having one or two ways to get in and out. The areas are generally watched by the security company that was hired to do so. These security measures have actually decreased crime in some neighborhoods. It has also made the asset value of these neighborhoods better. However, this only applies to the wealthy because a lot people cannot afford this.
Private security companies are working with the South African Police to tackle the high levels of crime. They have taken control of certain police stations so that the police can handle the main issues of detecting and preventing crime.
Private security businesses have a large amount of services for the community. They patrol the communities by foot and secure access points to homes and businesses. In addition, they give armed guard service to clients that make requests for them. In addition, they do installations and maintenance of security alarms and CCTV systems. There are other security businesses that add on their existing services by setting up medical response service for emergencies and trauma counseling.
